John Wanamaker Collection

Shopping at Wanamaker's Department Store at 13th and Market Streets in Philadelphia is a shared experience among many Pennsylvanians.

Housed at HSP, the John Wanamaker archives include 150 years of building and display designs, merchandise catalogs, business correspondence, photographs of activities, and much more in the hundreds of boxes and volumes.

With the closure of Wanamaker's successor Macy's this past March, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania is hosting a memory collection event on April 9. A sample of these documents will be on view, and participants will have the opportunity to share their memories with others. Oral history interviews will be accessioned into HSP's collection.
