In-house digital imaging reproduction services and permission to reproduce, publish, exhibit, or distribute images of HSP's collection materials are available, for a fee, through the Rights and Reproductions service.

Rights and Reproductions

While HSP rights and reproductions services have resumed on a limited capacity, due to high demand and continued COVID restrictions, we cannot estimate how long it will take to process new R&R orders. We apologize for the inconvenience.

What can HSP's Digital Services team provide?

  • New digital imaging of HSP material as requested

  • Copies of existing digital images, as seen on our Digital Library

  • Permission to reproduce HSP images for publication, exhibition, or public distribution

Digital reproductions are available for purchase as lower-resolution PDFs and high-resolution TIFF files (300/600ppi, 24-bit color, uncompressed).

Please note that possession of a digital reproduction of HSP’s collection materials does not constitute permission to publish or exhibit the image. Usage rights fees may apply and vary depending on whether a reproduction is for a non-profit/academic or commercial institution and how it will be used.

How much does it cost?

Image files:

  • High-resolution TIFF: $15.00

  • PDF*: $1.50 *per scan

  • Digitization Service Fee (as applicable for new digitization): $45.00 per order

Bulk discount:

  • Orders with 5 or more TIFF files receive a 15% discount on the total cost. PDFs do not qualify.

Audio and video: Rights and Reproductions is capable of digitizing some audio formats in-house, not limited to CD, cassette, and ¼” reels. All video and select audio formats will be outsourced to a third-party vendor at HSP’s discretion. We do not provide physical copies of audiovisual material.

  • Digitization Fee (as applicable): $60.00

  • Item Fee: $25.00

Bulk discount (for orders of 15 items or more):

  • Digitization Fee (as applicable): $100.00

  • Item Fee: $15.00

Fees for outsourced requests are negotiated based on vendor prices.

Please note that possession of a digital reproduction of HSP’s collection materials does not constitute permission to publish or exhibit the image. Usage rights fees may apply and vary depending on how it will be used.

What can I do with HSP's digital images?

Many of our patrons are interested in using HSP images for research, or in a publication, exhibition, or documentary film. HSP material is also ideal for a variety of creative projects! We are always happy to discuss unique uses of our images.

Usage Agreements and Permissions

HSP provides permissions for use of digital copies for various purposes, not limited to publications, exhibitions, and broadcasting. Patrons interested in permission to use digital files for such uses or otherwise must contact Rights and Reproductions for a usage agreement and an estimate of usage fees. Usage fees are in addition to HSP’s reproduction fees. All usage fees are per-order.

What benefits are available to Friends of HSP?

Friends of HSP are entitled to a 10% discount on the total cost of their rights and reproductions orders. Please consult the details of our Friends benefits and please let us know about your membership when requesting rights and reproduction services. We look forward to fulfilling your rights and reproductions needs!
